All I need is Duran Duran Now

Simon LeBon video shoot
Duran Duran’s new single “All You Need Is Now” is due out on itunes on December 14. Only two weeks away!

I’ve already devoured a sneak listen over and over again. It has shades of the “Medazzaland” era and that’s definitely NOT a bad thing. It’s also got serious attitude like many an excellent Duran Duran song and a lovely vocal by Simon. Nick Egan is directing the video and since he did some of my very favorite Duran Duran videos (“White Lies”, “Perfect Day”, “Come Undone”, “Ordinary World”), I am drooling at the prospect of what this new video will be like.

The 9 song album will be up December 21. My only annoyance in this whole release is that the physical CD release isn’t until February so I’ll have to install iTunes to get it, a program I seriously detest. But there’s no way I’m waiting for this. Please. What kind of Duranie do you make me for?

I’m so intrigued to hear the rest of the album and am pleased as punch with Mark Ronson’s involvement. I think he’s been a fantastic collaborator and being such a fan himself, really understands what makes Duran Duran so special.

Speaking of Mark, I got to see him in action last month. He performed a set for Jimmy Kimmel Live (see photos). It was really fun, made more so because we got to see Alex Greenwald again. Oh Alex, how I miss Phantom Planet so much sometimes. *sniff*

That was one awesome night of music as we rushed over to see James at the Henry Fonda Theatre right after the show and made it just in time. And of course, James put on an epic show of amazing, powerful music. They really connect with their audience and like Duran Duran, they have put on some of the best concert experiences I’ve been lucky to be part of.

maybe we can be happy again

Phantom Planet’s show at the Troubadour last Friday was simply incredible.

The entire night was emotional, fun, silly, and surreal. This is a band I’ve loved and followed for 10 years. My first time seeing them live was September 20, 1998. Ten years later, it was hard to believe this would be their final show. Alex said they are on indefinite hiatus. Not a break-up technically, but still… and apparently Sam told folks after the show that maybe they’ll be back in a couple years. As it stands though, Friday night may have been the last time I rock out to “All Over Again”… sniff.

Thinking back to all the memories of shows and signings through the years, I can’t help but get a little choked up. This band and their music shaped and formed most of my 20′s.

I’m so thankful I was there for this special show. It was bittersweet and rather magical. Jacques came back to play a couple songs including Recently Distressed and boy, did that take me back!

The disLike opened. Again. In many ways, this show encapsulated all the things I loved and loathed about the Phantom Planet fandom/world.

I’m sad this amazing band never made it as big as they deserved but I feel lucky to have been part of their journey. Their music lives on and I’ll always have my crush on Sam… le sigh.

Uploaded 8 videos I took. Behind the cut for those interested.

NOOOOOOOOOO!

From PhantomPlanet.com:

This could be the most difficult piece of news we have ever had to post. Sadly, Phantom Planet will be playing our last show, December 12, at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, the same venue that we played our very first live all ages gig, back in 1994. We have had an amazing time playing together for 15 years, but we have officially decided to go on hiatus, and will not be playing any more live shows or making any new records, indefinitely. There is so much more to write, but at this time, we just want to say thank you, to everyone, for their support, friendship, inspiration, attendance, and love.

-alex, darren, jeff and sam.

A band I’ve loved and followed since 1998. 10 years. 30+ shows. I’m in shock. I’m sad. I’m bummed. And I’ve got my ticket for the show this Friday. I just didn’t think it would ever be their last.

we all get scared of sticking out our necks

Since I’m so wired right now, I’m only capable of posting in list form. Barely.

  • The new Phantom Planet album is so good it’s killing me.
  • This remake better not happen!
  • Getting your site hacked two times in a week BLOWS. People are such schmucks.
  • OTH was awful for my ship this week (despite a beautiful 10 second scene at the end). And the spoilers are just getting worse and worse. Sigh.
  • Packing/moving seriously sucks. I hope we don’t have to do this too many times in our lifetime.
  • I’m ridiculously excited to get the keys to our new house. I’m not all that sad to be leaving our condo. I thought I would be, but right now, I can’t wait. Every time I hear the lady above us stomping around or when I have to do laundry… can’t freakin’ wait.
  • I truly love my job, but right now, things are sad and sucky.
  • Seeing Scissors for Lefty tonight couldn’t be better timing. I need a night to lose myself in music.

yah

Busy, busy, busy. I should start all my posts the same way.

Going to Vegas on Sunday for a few days… It’s going to be fun since I don’t have any reason for going other than tagging along to attend some nice dinners while my guy works a couple hours each day. It will finally be a nice break I’ve been wanting for ages. Plus, keep trying to find time to do a proper Coachella write-up… and you know there was the Phantom Planet show last week (which rocked). And I keep not finding time. Hopefully, I will also get a little sparetime to continue research/planning for our massive road trip in July.

Speaking of… Continue reading

makes you want to feel makes you want to try

Coachella write up coming. Incredibly awesome weekend. Full of amazing music and memories with dear friends.

This week has been taken up by getting back into loads of work. Working on another immigration form that we have to file as soon as we can (this time adjustment of status for Remi’s permanent resident card) and getting all the evidence together. And Remi and I are planning a big summer road trip through all of western North America (more on that later). Involves more research, mapping routes, and making reservations before things fill up. We’re super excited though… it’s going to be rad.

Plus… Spider-Man tonight. Duranie dinner tomorrow night (I won’t get sad that we missed a JT/Roger show last weekend in LA or that the boys are doing a special fans only show in NY next month). Friends getting married on Sunday. Monday is a Phantom Planet show at the Roxy that we just found out about. Thursday we are seeing Loreena McKennitt at the Greek… and then there’s also hanging out with Kate all week before she head’s back to Australia.

And you know, new OTH. Finally.

Life is busy. Life is good. :)
